Peter Sceats – Founder

Peter Sceats has traded, brokered and consulted across oil, electricity, gas, coal, uranium and water. He has specialised in new markets, business start-ups and the formation of commodity indices.

Beginning with UK agricultural indices, Peter went on to develop the Month Ahead Gas Index of Italy and the API coal indices upon which the international coal market is based, and all European coal power stations and Atlantic Basin coal mines are valued. The coal indices he founded currently benchmark around $300 billion in international trade and are the subject of his podcast “Coal, My Part in its Downfall” published by Anchor.FM.

He set up risk management, trading and sales businesses for Tradition, RWE, BHP Billiton and Kazatomprom. These days he is an Expert Witness in commodities markets litigations and a private commodities market anti-corruption investigator.

Peter was, for five and a half years, “Co-ordinator of European Markets” for one of the world’s largest Energy Advisors procuring electricity and gas for medium and large-scale energy consumers. In 2016 he resigned this contract to set up Grand Union Co. with former Tradition colleagues.

He began his work in the water markets in 2010, inputting a model for a competitive water market to the Water White Paper that is was the basis for the Water Act of 2014, and the world’s first competitive water market that followed.

Grand Union Co. was founded in 1992 as the consultancy practice Peter Sceats & Associates based 102 Narrow Street, Limehouse, London. The firm initially operated as a vehicle for Peter to share his commodity broking and management consultancy experience. Early clients in the phase were Reuters, Bloomberg, Amerex and the Amsterdam Agricultural Exchange.

Peter’s then revolutionary idea of a new coal index and an associated forward market in coal derivatives was turned down by the International Petroleum Exchange but later taken up by Tradition Group in 1997 and the API coal index was born. This business plan became the centre of the new international coal market and gave rise to a $300bn forward market. Peter went on to set up energy risk management and trading for RWE Energy, BHPBilliton and Kazatomprom.

Working on the UK Government’s Water White Paper, Peter devised a competitive wholesale water market for Great Britain called the “GB Virtual Water Main”, itself based loosely around the Grand Union Canal. This project gave rise to the consultancy practice’s change of name to Grand Union Water Co. and eventually Grand Union Co. In this phase we were awarded the contract to set up the European office of Tradition’s retail energy broking arm.

Having resigned a five-year Tradition contract, Grand Union was active on the first day of the new water retail market in England, it expanded into energy a year later.

While continuing to be an active broker of water and energy services across UK, Europe and the USA, Grand Union expanded into Lease Car Portfolio Management, FX Payments via collaboration with Western Union Business Solutions and Tax Savings & Representative Office Services.

Grand Union is proud to be UK agent for the “Game Changer Anti-Corrosion Device” that attaches to the outside water pipes. Water molecules are agitated by a minute amount of naturally generated electricity (cathodic reaction, no power source needed). The shaken water molecules can no longer “settle” and cause corrosion/limescale; the newly corrosion-resistant water clears the pipes of old limescale too. No effect on water potability. Boilers, heat exchangers, radiators etc. get extended life and so avoiding the carbon emissions associated with replacement kit. ROIs of circa 3 months (depending on setting).
